About Us

Tailor Ed Foundation (SC039246) is a charity established in 2008. It was set up to teach daily living skills to children with autism. We work with families living in the city of Edinburgh with a child with autism up to the age of 12. We are funded by the Big Lottery, therefore our services are available to families for free. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please contact us.

Our interventions are based on Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) which is a therapeutic approach developed from the study of human behaviour.  The techniques and procedures involved are scientifically validated and there is strong evidence that they are effective in both reducing challenging or inappropriate behaviour as well as teaching skills.  This has been found to be the case for all sorts of different people and situations and ABA isn’t a therapy designed specifically for children with autism.  The approach can however be particularly useful when supporting children with autism because it carefully considers an individual’s motivations.  It is not a treatment or cure for autism however it has been found to be an effective educational approach for teaching children with autism the skills they need for daily life, including a method of communication.  Other specific interventions commonly used when working with people with autism such as Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) are derived from ABA. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) state that for children with autism ‘Behavioural interventions should be considered to address a wide range of specific behaviours, both to reduce symptom frequency and severity and to increase the development of adaptive skills’.  At Tailor Ed, our main focus is to increase the development of adaptive daily living skills.

As you are likely to be aware, we have a long wait list for our home based support service.  Given the length of this wait, we feel it’s no longer responsible or fair to accept new referrals. This will allow us to allocate more resources to providing support to the families already referred to us and waiting for our services.  We will review this decision in 6 months but, in the meantime ,we won’t be accepting new referrals.

If you have been referred to Tailor Ed then all this should mean is that we can provide you with services more quickly.

If you have not yet submitted a referral then we are afraid we won’t be able to accept it for now, regardless of which services you wish to access.  The one exception to this is the autism friendly play sessions we offer in partnership with Time Twisters which continue to be open to any families who have a child with autism.
